Kennet launches its 'Keep Kennet Clean and Safe' campaign on the 21st May 2007. During the three week long campaign the Council will be providing additional resources to help clean and improve areas and will be working in close partnership with the Wiltshire Constabulary and the Wiltshire Fire brigade to tackle anti-social behaviour and street scene offences such as littering, fly tipping and the abandoning of vehicles.
The first week of the campaign will be centred in and around Devizes, the following week Marlborough and the surrounding area with the final week in Tidworth.
Streets and amenity areas will be patrolled by Kennet District Council staff and Police Officers who will give out on the spot fines of £75 to anyone found dropping litter. Additional street cleaning staff will also be scheduled to the campaign areas to ensure any litter dropped is cleared immediately.
The Council's staff will patrol known anti-social behaviour areas with a view to having a highly visible presence to discourage nuisance behaviour. The Council staff will be in constant contact with their colleagues at the Wiltshire Constabulary so any problems are dealt with quickly and safely.
The campaign runs alongside the Kennet District Council's ‘Community Litter Pick Up Scheme' that gives local groups and schools the opportunity to hire out litter picking equipment. The scheme aims to help local residents create a more respectful and enjoyable environment. The Council has litter picking equipment that can be loaned to any community group, street watch group, neighbourhood watch or school in the district.
Mark Smith (Director of Environment and Leisure Services) said; "The Kennet District is one of the most beautiful areas in the United Kingdom. We are all responsible for keeping it that way. Kennet District Council is asking for everyone to take part in ‘Keeping Kennet Clean' and to continue the good work into the future."
