Trading standards officers from WiltshireCouncil are pleased to report that cosmetics aimed at children have passed thelatest safety tests. In the run up to Child Safety Week (June 22-29) tradingstandards across Wiltshire sampled children’s cosmetics to assess their safety.

The samples analysed covered a range ofcosmetics from shower gels and face paints to blushers. They were tested forheavy metal content, such as lead and cadmium, which have been linked tolearning, language and behavioural difficulties, and reduced fertility in laterlife.

A total of 50 samples were taken across thewest of England.None of the cosmetics sampled in Wiltshire contained detectable levels of leador cadmium.  These chemicals are strictlycontrolled throughout the EU and should be limited especially where productsare aimed at children.

Steve Clover, head of commercial andconsumer protection at Wiltshire Council, said “This is excellent news. It isimperative that young people can use cosmetics safely and are protected frompotentially harmful chemicals. Manufacturers of cosmetics aimed at children areclearly working to comply with the law and should be applauded for theirdiligence.”
