Since the introduction of Alternate Weekly Collections of refuse and recycling in July of this year, the Council has seen a dramatic rise in the volume of recyclables placed out in black boxes by residents, with an extra 180 tonnes being collected each month by the Council’s recycling crews.
Residents have embraced the new black bin and box system and taken up the recycling challenge. This commitment to recycling has resulted in an all time high recycling rate of over 42% for October 2006, an increase of 17.5% when compared to the October 2005 figure of 24.5%. This is an outstanding achievement and all Kennet residents should be justifiably proud of their efforts.
Councillor Chris Humphries, Leader of the Council said:
“This news is a fantastic result for our residents, without whom this achievement would not have been possible, because it reflects the terrific commitment they have shown to our recycling scheme. Alternate Weekly Collections have encouraged residents to think very carefully about what can be recycled and what should be thrown away and it’s excellent to see so many people now using the kerbside recycling service and local bring sites across the district. I thank all residents in Kennet for their continued support in helping to increase the amount of recyclable material diverted from landfill.”
Thanks to the dedication residents have shown to the new service, the amount of waste being sent to landfill has consistently declined, whilst recycling collected has gone through the roof. Alternate Weekly Collections have been hugely successful in the Kennet district and will continue to be so as residents carry on pulling out all the stops to reduce the amount of waste they put in their black bin and fill their black recycling boxes.
