A team of top Japanese researchers visited Tidworth, looking at how rural communities in the UK shape their own future through various initiatives and projects.

The Development Trusts Association (DTA) were approached by an organisation based in London, which has close links with Japan, to arrange a visit to a rural community that could demonstrate a good example of community work in progress.

Steve Lawton, Chief Executive, Tidworth Development Trust (TDT) said: “It’s an honour to be selected for this special visit. We have a lot to be proud of and the work in our area is a good example to show Japanese researchers how community groups can work well in the UK.”

The group of high-powered delegates included two professors and senior regional development researchers, who were given a presentation and literature allowing them to gain a full understanding of Tidworth Community Area Partnership (TCAP), its Community Plan and projects within it and how Tidworth Development Trust is involved.  The information provided to the delegation could shape the future of communities in Japan.

A talk from Col Carron Snagge, Garrison Commander and Chairman of TCAP, gave them a brief insight of how the military presence in Tidworth is very much a part of the community as well.

Following a discussion period using an interpreter, the team spent the rest of their time visiting local projects including, TEMPO, its employment and advice centre and Castledown Media Centre, which houses TCAP’s communication project, including Castledown Radio.
