Soldiers from The King’s Royal Hussars(KRH) were awarded the Iraq Medal on parade at their barracks recently.

Back from a dangerous but successful tour of duty in Iraq at the beginning of October, two Sabre Squadrons and the Regimental Headquarters received their medals in front of their families before marching to church for a Service of Thanksgiving. The Medals were presented by the Colonel of the Regiment, Brigadier Christopher Price CBE.

The Regiment had a varied six months in Iraq, with jobs as diverse as spending weeks on counter-smuggling operations on the border with Iran, living in the desert like nomads, and escorting convoys and raids into the centre of Basrah City.  For this tour, they left their heavy Challenger 2 Tanks at their base in Tidworth, and learned to crew a spectrum of other vehicles more suitable for patrolling in Iraq – notably the Warrior Armoured Fighting Vehicle and the WIMIK, a specially adapted Land Rover ideal for long-range patrolling in the desert.

During their time in Iraq, the Regiment was responsible for the detention of a particularly dangerous insurgent commander and destroyed over twenty tons of ordnance which the enemy could have used to attack British soldiers or Iraqis.  They came under attack very regularly and from a variety of different weapons, and their families are relieved and proud to have them back.
