Hailed as ‘a fantastic sporting event for young people’ by the organisers, more than 450 primary school children from across the Tidworth community area came together to take part in a special sports festival laid on by Kennet District Council and its partners.

Now in its third year, The Tidworth Primary Schools Sports Festival is a large-scale sporting event aimed at encouraging and engaging young people who live in rural communities to become active and stay healthy.

Despite the glorious sunshine turning to rain during the afternoon, spirits remained high as many of the children expressed how much fun the event was.

Eleven year-old Chloe from Bulford’s Kiwi Primary School took part in the girls’ five-a-side football, and after being asked about taking part, she said: “It was great, but as it was our first time we weren’t very good, we lost 0-2, but we’re getting there.”

Among the other events held at the Tidworth Oval and at Tidworth Leisure Centre (TLC), the children took part in a variety of fun sports, including High Five Netball, Basketball, Athletics, Mini Hockey and Football for boys and girls.

In total, thirteen primary schools took part, including schools from outside the local

Tidworth area.

“The facilities here in Tidworth are fantastic; with the Tidworth Oval and the TLC. The reason we have included

primary schools outside of the Tidworth community is because we would like as many schools as possible to use the

facilities and also for other children to have that opportunity. We like to create school clubs links, which means we

get many of the local clubs involved and they go out to the schools and carry out coaching and it’s nice at the end all

of that to conclude it with this festival,” said organiser, Amanda Cox from Kennet District Council.

“The other agenda, is we want to see children being active and this event ensures they have an enormous amount of

fun; they may never have played the sport before, but at least they go away with a positive attitude saying I

want to more of that,” added Amanda.
